To commemorate the decisive battle of Trafalgar that took place on October 21st. 1805, it is thus entirely approriate that Arnold & Son should launch a special version of its Longitude II and its White Ensign. The late 18th and early 19th century was a period of intense naval rivalry among the world powers. Much of the struggle for dominance was played out in the seas, and one of the keys to gaining a strategic edge lay in a "secret weapon" the rapidly developing art (and science!) of horology... Chronometrists such as John Arnold (1736-1799), official supplier to the Royal Navy and a brilliant horological inventor, played a crucial role in the quest to calculate longitude. This achievement was to forster the tradition of exploration and discovery to which the Arnold & Son engineers and watchmakers remain faithful to this day.
As visitors continue to flock to London’s Trafalgar Square wirh its towering Nelson’s column and statue, a privileged circle of connoisseurs will derive special pride from sharing in this horological tribute to the world’s most famous naval battle.
